Norma was 94 years old. Born September 3, 1925, in East Orange, New Jersey. Norma was the daughter of Edna Herter Freimuth and Rudolph William Freimuth of New Jersey. She is survived by a brother, Richard C. Freimuth (Lorraine) of Wyckoff, New Jersey, and three children: Kerry Beth Conant Kelso (David) of Sierra Vista, Arizona, David Christian Conant of Westlake, Ohio, and Muriel Elizabeth Conant Garvey (Gregory) of Hamden, Connecticut. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren: Amanda Apicella, Cassandra Scheffman, Jordan Scheffman, Michael Conant, Mathew Conant, David Conant Jr., Malcolm Garvey, and her two great-grandchildren: Bodhi Skroch and Ceiba Scheffman. Norma was pre-deceased by her former husband, Herbert Davenport Conant, her sister, Marjorie Freimuth Tate, and a daughter, Martha Laurel Conant Brailsford. Norma was a homemaker, a talented artist, and inspired pianist. Her piano playing made her not only a favorite with the residents at Bickford but also in demand as a performer at local senior living homes with The Desert Readers in Tucson, Arizona, her home for most of the last part of her life. She had a lifelong fascination with other cultures, wrote poetry, and had a deep reverence for life. Along with her beloved dog, Wiley, and her cats over the years, Norma loved all animals and supported animal welfare organizations such as the ASPCA. A caring neighbor and model citizen, she participated in local Hunger Walks and was an early adopter of recycling. Her deeply held religious beliefs and concern for others led to active roles at Mentor Methodist Church in Mentor, Ohio, where she was President and Program Director of United Methodist Women for many years, as well as First United Methodist Church in Tucson, Arizona, where she also led programs and was very involved in the church’s charitable work with Mexican communities. An important influence in her family, Norma was deeply devoted to her children and grandchildren, three of whom she helped raise, and who speak highly of the role she played in their lives. Her gentle, kind, and compassionate nature, along with a charming sense of humor, made her loved by all who knew her. Norma will be greatly missed.
