Obituary Cumberland, MD – James H. Ashby, Sr., 92, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2020, at his home. Born June 20, 1927, in Cumberland, MD, Mr. Ashby, Sr., was the son of the late George E. Ashby, Sr., and Elmira (Nailor) Ashby. He was also preceded in death by his son: James H. Ashby, Jr.; his sisters: Jean Barnes, Mary Daugherty, and Emma Ashby; his brothers: George, Jr., Samuel, Charles, and Joseph Ashby; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. James is survived by his wife of 70 years: June L. (Males) Ashby; his daughter: Virginia Moore and husband, Robert; and his son: Ernest V. Ashby, Sr, and wife, Clarissa. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Eric, Aaron, James, Maurice, Vance, and Veronica: his great grandchildren: Justin, Chloe, Taylor, Jaxiyah, Jaxsun, and Ernest Vance, III “Trey;” as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and a special nephew, Joseph and his wife, Maria, who were always there to offer their support when needed. James was a United States Army Veteran of World War II and retired from the Chessie System after 46 years of service as a machinist. James was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, SS. Peter and Paul Shrine, and served as an usher. He was a member of the local V.F.W. for 71 years and a Third-Degree Member of the the Knights of Columbus Council #586, Cumberland, MD. Services will be private. Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
