At the age 95, Helen Shelton passed away peacefully in her home on May 3, 2020 in Springfield, PA. Helen was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 9, 1924 to William A. Smith and Margaret Smith (Pflieger). She was a graduate of Springfield High School in 1942. Helen joined the Navy post high school and served for 2 years during WWII. Helen then attended West Chester State Teachers College and received her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1951. She taught within Springfield School District for over 20 years. She then took early retirement and traveled for many years. She loved the opportunities she had to travel and socialize with her friends. Helen was a beloved member of her Church family at Springfield Baptist for around 40 years. She loved to play the piano and served her church community with her talent. She also served by teaching Sunday School and helping with Awana. Helen was the first female president of the Springfield Chapter of AARP, an active member of the VFW and volunteered at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park for many years. In her later years, Helen continued to use her musical abilities at St. Matthews Preschool in Springfield through her late 80’s. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bill, her son Alan Welsh and her granddaughter Gabrielle Oberti. Helen is survived by her daughter Jeanne Oberti of Springfield, PA. She was Nanny to Rafael Oberti, Christopher (Kristen) Oberti, & Stephanie (Ryan) Kotulka. She was Gigi to her great grandchildren, Hailey, Colton, Gavin & another little boy coming in June. Helen will be fondly remembered by her excellence in teaching, her love for Jesus, her family, Philadelphia sports teams and her quick wit and quirky sayings.
