Esther’s Obituary Esther T. Harms, age 91 passed away May 28, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake, SD. Graveside services will be at the Tea Cemetery in Tea and a Memorial Service may be held at a later date. Esther T. Harms was born May 13, 1929 to William and Gertie (Straatmeyer) Javers. She was raised on a farm near Tea, SD and attended Home School Dist. #4. After which she started working for various families and eventually lived and worked in Sioux Falls. After meeting Homer H. Harms at a roller-skating party at Wall Lake, they married on a very cold January day in 1948- at Germantown Presbyterian Church, Chancellor, SD. They moved to the farm where they lived out S2 years together until Homer passed away in 2000. She continued to live on the farm until 201S when she moved to Edgewood Assisted Living. Esther loved her garden! The garden was next to the feed lot, she could raise anything! She once raised a 5 ½ lb sweet potato. Her favorite things to grow were gourds and tomatoes. She would make it a mission every day to pull 100 weeds! Her life was The Farm. She would be out working next to Homer and her sons, milking cows, picking roe or hauling bales. And of course, the famous day she cut her finger in the oat seeder and Homer was so mad because he had to take her in for stitches!! All in a day’s work for a farmer’s wife. Don’t forget the countless meals taken out to the field all hours of the day. She loved to bake and cook for others – her apple pies were amazing! Seemed like she always had an extra plate of goodies at the table and more goodies in the freezer for neighbors or anybody who happened to stop by during meal time. She enjoyed taking long walks with the dog around the trees every night, not being a cat lover, they would often chase off the strays! She loved her grandkids, they spent countless hours at the farm- learning how to cook, bake and run farm equipment. She loved her time with her great granddaughters too! She was proud of her four generations. One of our greatest memories is that Homer would bring her a cup of tea every morning before she got up. Homer & Esther enjoyed wintering in Texas for over 13 years, where they met great friends. She liked to travel, but always was ready to be home on the farm. She is survived by her children, “the twins” Paul Harms and Glen (Lilette) Harms; “only one daughter” Patty (Dennis) Haugen; grandchildren, Kathy Nielson (Joel Kleinsasser), Jodi Harms, Kelly & Michelle Haugen, Jessica Harms (Philip Waldner) and two great granddaughters, Lily and Brinlee; special nieces, Gladys Javers & Barb Stormo; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She called herself the last survivor, as she was the last one from her family to pass. She is preceded in death by her husband Homer; her parents; four brothers, James, Edward, Clarold and Raymond and their wives; two nephews, her in-laws; and a brother-in-law, she never got to meet. We would like to Thank: Edgewood Assisted Living, Good Samaritan Society-Deuel County and Prairie Lakes Hospice for their care and compassion. Read More
