Dwight J Guthrie May 11, 2020 Dwight J. Guthrie of Ross Twp. On May 11th, 2020. Dwight was born at home in the Glade Run Hollow, Brandonville, WV on May 6, 1934, son of the late Troy and Eula (Fike) Guthrie. Beloved husband of the late Mabel (Weaver) Guthrie and currently Janet (Schafer). Loving father of Dwight David (Mary Ann) Guthrie, Michael D. (Cathy) Guthrie, Darryl L. (Jill) Guthrie, Diana G. (Jeff) Surgent, and the late Debra S. Uber; father in law of Kerry D. Uber; brother of Alice Shepperd, the late Thelma Penland and infant brother Robert. Grandfather to the late, Josh Guthrie, Grant Uber, Christie Ramsey, David Guthrie, Rebekah Fombelle, Troy Guthrie, Taylor James, Bethany James, Rachel Surgent. Great grandfather to Gavin Uber, Cheyenne Uber, Paisley Uber, Sophia James, Penelope James, Colton Ramsey, Cody Ramsey, Charlotte Ramsey, Killian Fombelle, Cayden Fombelle, Carter James. Dwight married Mabel Weaver on June 7, 1952 with whom they shared 5 children. Dwight served in the United States Marine Corp Reserve from 1952 to 1955. He joined the Ross Township Police force in 1955. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant in 1966 and become the township’s first Juvenile Officer working with young people in the community. In 1967 he was working with juveniles was the first to implement the BLOCK PARENT program. He graduated from Allegheny Community College in 1972 with an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. He also served as a detective and was instrumental on the team that cracked the Jill DeJohn Murder/Extortion case in 1976. In 1982 he attended the prestigious FBI National Academy for law enforcement. In 1983 he was chosen as Ross Chief of Police, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. Subsequent to the loss of his beloved wife Mabel in 2008 he re-married Janet Schafer on May 6, 2011. Dwight enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and spent many years enjoying his grandparents farm which he had lovingly restored. Dwight was a charter member of Cornerstone Christian Community in Ross Township. Having served as a Trustee, Board Member, and Usher. He was known for his generosity to others and his willingness to help those in need. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested in Dwight’s name to Cornerstone Church, 129 Bellevue Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15229.
