She was the oldest female of her 4 siblings and was a mother figure to them all. They called her Bern and she was also known by her cousins as ‘Sis’. Bernadette was called home for eternal rest on April 29, 2020. She was raised in Baltimore, Maryland and was partially educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. She graduated from Phenix High School in Hampton, Virginia in 1942. After relocating back to Baltimore, she met the late William O. Chase, Jr. and they wed in 1943. She worked at several drugstores and was employed by Naron Candy Company for 16 years. She was fortunate to have worked with 3 of her siblings (Albert, Wallace and Ernestine), as well as other family members. Bernadette was affectionately known as Aunt Bern. She had a pleasant disposition, a nurturing nature, and was very personable. She was sharp, witty and had a wonderful sense of humor. She loved to laugh and had a robust one. She always said laughing keeps you young. Aunt Bern lived with her sister, Ernestine, on Braddish Avenue for 40+ years. She enjoyed spending time with family, laughing and joking. At other times, she liked to spend time alone and do things she loved, including reading, crossword puzzles, word searches, playing cards (often solitaire) and watching television. Aunt Bern also thoroughly enjoyed talking on the phone, sometimes for hours, and prided herself in that she could hold a conversation almost about anything, especially because she watched the news all the time. She was very wise and offered advice to anyone in need. Aunt Bern forged personal relationships with friends of the family and treated them as her family as well. Aunt Bern was a very neat and clean person, and was very particular about everything. She always read the food nutrition labels, ate healthy and obsessed about being organized and clean. She was a fashionista as well. You could count on her to tell you about what styles and colors were in for the upcoming season. Aunt Bern loved children and had especially close relationships with some of her nieces, nephews and great nieces. They spent countless hours on the phone and hanging out at times. She was a great shopping companion, as she had an eye for classy styles and good bargains, no matter how long it would take to find the item. Aunt Bern also used a lot of sayings that she made up that are hilarious and are considered classics to her family. Bernadette was preceded in death by her brothers Albert, Dubois and Wallace, and her baby sister Ernestine. She leaves to cherish fond memories a large host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and great great great nieces and nephews, as well as cousins and other relatives. Aunt Bern stated that she knew she would be missed when she is gone from us, but hoped that one would smile when she comes to mind. Read More
