SOFIANIDES, Thomas, M.D. passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Friday, February 14, 2020. He was born at Hackensack Hospital and served on the hospital staff for 47 years. Dr. Sofianides retired in 2008 as Chief Emeritus of the division of Endocrinology in Metabolism and was a senior attending physician in the Department of Internal Medicine. Tom grew up in Wood-Ridge, NJ and in 1990, he was inducted into the Wood-Ridge High School Hall of Fame for his athletic achievements, high moral integrity and outstanding citizenship. An alumnus of St. Louis University School of Medicine, Tom completed his residency in Internal Medicine in Kings County Hospital and at Jersey City Medical Center. Tom was a National Institute of Health Research Fellow in Endocrinology at Georgetown University. He served as a Medical Captain in the U.S. Army at Ft. Gordon, GA. Following his medical training, Dr. Sofianides was Chief Medical Resident at Hackensack Hospital. He was then chosen as the first full time director of Medical Education and at that time, he was the youngest in the United States. In 1961, Dr. Sofianides founded the Endocrine Clinic in Hackensack Hospital. He became the first board certified Endocrinologist in the State of NJ in 1964. He was a charter member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology. His specialty was thyroid. He published papers and lectured on the subject. Tom loved practicing medicine, sailing, history, jazz and poetry. Even in his 80’s, he was still reciting poems by heart. He was interested in sports, politics and the lives of his ancestors. A devoted husband and loving father, he gave his wife Anna and daughter Catherine morale support and enthusiastic encouragement in all their endeavors. Tom touched many lives and helped many people. The memory of his humility and noble spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by his beloved nieces, nephew and cousins. He was predeceased by his older siblings, Clara, Faye and Jimmy. Visitation at the Barrett Funeral Home, Tenafly on Sunday, February 16 from 3-6PM. Funeral Service will be held at Cathedral of St. John the Theologian, 353 E. Clinton Ave, Tenafly on February 17 at 10AM. Burial will follow at Brookside Cemetery, Englewood. In lieu of flowers, a donation for a scholarship may be made in his name to the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian.
