WINDHAM- Stephanie Suzanne Lay, 50, died unexpectedly at her Windham home on February 16, 2020. She was born in Dallas, TX on August 19, 1969, the daughter of Cherie (Hartman) and Jimmie Martin Lay. Stephanie was the youngest of three children born to her parents, having two older brothers, Gary and Darron. Stephanie grew up in Texas and was a self-proclaimed “wild child”, especially following the death of her mother when she was 13. She and her father remained close until his death in 2005. Stephanie and school did not always get along, but she was an A student in life right up until the time of her death. Stephanie’s life changed immeasurably when she gave birth to her son, Bryce, on June 29, 2000. She was enthralled with him from the moment of his birth and all her decisions that came afterward were geared toward her son’s well being. Bryce was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at the age of three and Stephanie was transformed into a warrior momma who fought for him at every turn. They had an unparalleled relationship and whether they were together or apart, Bryce began and ended each day with Stephanie’s sweet voice, “Momma loves you.” Stephanie’s other joy was music and she was over the moon when Bryce recently performed in a concert at school. Concerned about her son’s future, Stephanie ‘accidentally’ started a salsa business six years ago. Her dream was for Bryce and others like him to have meaningful jobs and lives in spite of their challenges. What began in her home kitchen with a few orders from friends has grown, through Stephanie’s spirit, grit and determination, to the incorporation of Maine-Tex Grilled Salsa. Hannaford’s in West Falmouth was the first to carry her salsa, but it is now available in Hannaford’s throughout the state, as well as some other markets. She was very proud of her company and was never happier than when she and Bryce were “working the family business”. Stephanie also established a non-profit organization, the SPECIAL foundation, Special People Engaging Community in Autism Lives. Stephanie was predeceased by both of her parents and her brother, Gary. She is survived by her brother, Darron, her nephew, Chris, and her cousin, Ronnie, all of TX, as well as other cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition, Stephanie left behind a strong tribe of friends who are devastated by her death and working hard to ensure that Bryce is well loved and cared for and that the legacy of her company continues. A celebration of Stephanie’s life will be held at the Woodford’s Club, 179 Woodford St. in Portland, on Saturday, February 29, at 1:00 pm. If you wish, please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Stephanie’s GoFundMe page to help care for Bryce’s needs.
