(Walker) D’Amico, 80, a long-time resident of Warwick, died peacefully on February 7, 2020 at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the beloved wife of George D’Amico. They were married on February 20, 1965 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, East Greenwich, RI. Born in Providence on January 4, 1940, she was the daughter of the late John and Evelyn (DeGiorgis) Walker. Joan graduated from Assumption School, Providence in 1954 and St. Mary’s Academy of the Visitation, Providence in 1957. Joan was a 1960 graduate of the Saint Joseph Hospital School of Nursing and worked at the Hospital as a Registered Nurse from her graduation through August 2007, when she retired. Her career encompassed working in many different departments of the Saint Joseph Hospital Providence Unit, including Medical-Surgical floors, Emergency Department, Walk-in Treatment Center and most recently, Rehabilitation (both Acute and Subacute). One of the doctors who was involved with Joan’s care during her most recent stay at Rhode Island Hospital remarked upon hearing Joan’s nursing background that she was a nurse that “you would have wanted to work with”. And this is so true. Her knowledge, diagnostic skills, attention to detail, persistence, and advocacy made her an asset not only to her patients but to family and friends as well. Joan especially enjoyed her time working in the Emergency Department, where she had a good camaraderie with co-workers and was able to share in the occasional humorous moments that would occur! Joan enjoyed being a mother and having a family. She kept up the tradition of Sunday Dinner. While not everyone was able to attend every week, most were there to have dinner and spend some time together as family. And Joan was most especially happy whenever her granddaughter, Paige, was at her house. Joan loved Paige’s sense of humor as well as her intelligence and sweetness. Joan was a very good cook and baker. At Christmastime, she would make numerous trays of assorted cookies not only to have on hand for holiday dessert and snacking but also to share with family and friends. And at any time of year if one went from the D’Amico house hungry, it was his or her own fault! Joan always had more food on hand, especially pasta, sauce, and meatballs. Joan was the glue that kept family and friends together. She organized and cooked for many parties and get-togethers. She kept in touch with friends and neighbors and reached out to those in need via visits and phone calls, making soup or a meal, and utilizing her nursing skills as needed. Joan liked gardening, traveling (including trips to the National Parks, England, Italy, and France), and taking care of – with her husband’s help – of numerous cats and dogs as well as fish, chickens, and even a goat! If there was a stray pet in the area, it knew that it could find a home at the D’Amico residence! In addition to her husband of almost 55 years, Joan is survived by her four children: David D’Amico of Cranston, Janice Tapley and her husband Michael of Hope Valley, Jennifer Hawkins and her husband Scott of West Greenwich, and Daniel D’Amico and his wife Laura (Petsching) of Hope Valley, as well as her granddaughter, Paige D’Amico of Hope Valley, and her sister Janet Padula of Warwick.
