James “Jim”‘s Obituary James Francis Silbernagel was born on April 22, 1940 in Mobridge, SD to Dorothy (Schweitzer) and Frank Silbernagel. He grew up on the family farm in Trail City and graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1958. Following his graduation, he attended Humboldt Institute in Minneapolis, MN. After finishing college, he returned to Timber Lake, SD and married Harriet Hodgman on June 17, 1961, a marriage that lasted a wonderful 58 years. They raised three children: Gary, Barbara, and Terry. Jim spent the first part of his professional career working for the Milwaukee Railroad which meant, “pack your bags”. The Milwaukee Railroad transferred Jim and Harriet to Minnesota in the early 60’s, then Nebraska in the mid 60’s, back to Minnesota in the late 60’s and Idaho in 1970. Even with all that moving and 8 years spanning between the 3 kids they were all born in the same St. Paul Hospital. In 1974, he was transferred to San Ramon, CA where he found his love for coaching sports, especially soccer. In 1978, he was again transferred, this time to Washington. He continued coaching soccer and developed a love for the Pacific Northwest. Jim loved camping and hiking and could be found most weekends either fighting with refs on a soccer field or camping at the Dalles at Mt. Rainier National Park outside Enumclaw, WA. There was just one thing missing in Jim’s life that still needed to be fulfilled. He missed South Dakota, farming and family so they made the decision to move home. In 1993, Jim and Harriet moved to Box Elder, SD to start a new chapter in their life by purchasing a Dairy farm that they later converted into a small ranch. Being home in South Dakota allowed Jim to be close to family and friends and get back to the life he enjoyed when he was younger. Best of all, he was free to be himself and share that contagious laugh of his that we all loved. He is survived by his wife, Harriet; three children, Gary, Barbara (Don) Rhodes, and Terry (Denise); brother, Robert (Joanne); sisters, Marie Biegler, Linda (Dan) Arnio, Patty, Peggy (Bill) Schell, Elaine (Brad) Haack and Kathy; 7 grandchildren, Alex, Shelby, Amber, Jordon, Justin, Jacob, and Garrett; and 2 great-grandchildren. Jim passed away on February 9, 2020 at Fountain Springs Nursing Home in Rapid City, SD. Visitation will be Thursday, February 13, 2020 from 10:00-11:00am at Kirk Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 11:30am at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City with Father Bill Zandri officiating. Read More
