Gabriel “Gene” Garza, 61, of Rockdale died on Monday, February 3, 2020 in the Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia. He was born on September 4, 1958 to Gabriel R. and Rosa Ruth (Leyendecker) Garza in Cameron. On November 11, 2011, he married Brenda Sue Minor at the First Baptist Church in Milano. Gene first worked at ALCOA as a trainer before becoming a truck driver for WS Industries for Joe Tovar and then for PCI. He loved being outside enjoying the country life and fishing. He loved animals, especially dogs and his donkey, Bobby. He enjoyed gardening and was always proud of his watermelons. He had a love for reading, history was his favorite subject and had almost become a history teacher. He liked to watch football and followed the Houston Texans. He was always calm and easygoing. He was a friend to everybody and had an impeccable sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel and Rosa Garza; a daughter, Heather Marie Garza; and a son, Hagen Eugene Garza. Gene is survived by his wife, Brenda Sue Garza of Rockdale; children, Terry L. Garza of Rockdale, Emily F. Garza and husband Julian Gonzalez of Rockdale, Victoria E. Garza of Bastrop, Buck D. Garza of Cedar Park, Diana Juarez of Franklin, and Joel Juarez of Ft. Worth; brother, Ernest Garza and wife Charlotte of Rockdale; sisters, Melba Garza of Cedar Park, Irene Garza of Rockdale, Cathy Stracener of Rockdale, and Martha Garza of Rockdale; grandchildren, Phillip Gill, Hannah Nicole Rodriguez, Harper Brielle Rodriguez, Jayla Rose Gonzalez, Jaxon Anthony Gonzalez, Evelia Lorrai ne Garcia, and one on the way, Andie Jay. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Phillips & Luckey in Rockdale with Pastor Harvey Abke officiating. The burial will be in the Garza Cemetery immediately following the service. There will be a visitation on Monday, February 10, 2020 from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
