On February 10, 2020, Ernest Mitchell Herrington went to meet his Savior after a long illness. Known to everyone as Ernie, he loved people and never met a stranger. Visitation will be 1pm-2pm Saturday, February 15, 2020, at Stringer Family Home in Crystal Springs. A memorial service will be 2pm Saturday, February 15, 2020, at Stringer Family Chapel. Stringer Family Funeral Home in Crystal Springs is handling arrangements. Ernie was an accomplished archer and hunter, winning many awards and contests. He was a Charter Member of the Mississippi Bowhunters Association, and served many years on their Board of Directors. He was also a member of the National Field Archery Association for 50 years. Ernie was a conservationist and actively supported our hunting heritage. He was a member of the Mississippi Wildlife Federation, and his greatest love was turkey hunting. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and experience with others and took delight in teaching and encouraging young hunters. He was also a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and served many years with the Copiah County Chapter, working to save habitats and conserve the turkey population. Ernie served in the US Navy Construction Battalion, known as the Seabees. He loved his country, cherished his service, and strongly supported veterans, especially our Wounded Warriors. Ernie retired from the Mississippi Department of Transportation after 35 years. He helped build the bridges of I-55 from Vaiden to Byram. In 2006, after Hurricane Katrina, he was called out of retirement to work as quality control in the construction of the Biloxi Bay Bridge. This was the crowning achievement in his construction career. Above all, Ernie loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, JoAnne George Herrington, daughter Marnie Herrington Hudson (Robert), granddaughter Sara Alombro (Jacob), great granddaughter Charlotte Alombro, and his 5 sisters: Peggy Fleenor, Faye Thomas, Voncile Breazeale (Paul), Billie Joe Myers (Billy D), and Jimmie Brescia (Bill). And, a wonderful collection of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Galen and Eula Herrington, and his two older brothers, Arlen and Howard. He will be missed by many.
