February 24 2020
Elizabeth “Betty” Margaret Powers Malone of Dobbs Ferry, NY passed away peacefully on February 24, 2020 at St. John’s Riverside Hospital. Betty served at St. John’s Riverside Hospital for over 50 years as a nurse, instructor, volunteer and Trustee. A fixture at the hospital, she was known for her quick wit and keen insight. She loved being a St. John’s nurse! She began her career at the old St. John’s as a student at the Cochran School of Nursing (Class of 1944), then as a nurse. After taking time to start a family she returned to St John’s and was a head Nurse on the 5th floor when the current hospital opened in 1964. The Hospital and our community were blessed when she transferred to become a senior instructor in Medical/Surgical Nursing at Cochran, a position she held for over 20 years, where she educated hundreds of nurses who have served our community with compassion for many years. She furthered her education by obtaining a B.A in Psychology from Fordham University as well as a Masters from Manhattan College. Upon her retirement she continued to serve the hospital as a volunteer, becoming President of the Auxiliary and subsequently serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hospital. She was a former board member of the Visiting Nurse Service of Hudson Valley as well. She enjoyed traveling the world with her friends during her retirement, was an avid Yankee fan and completed the NY Times crossword puzzle every day until her eyesight began to fail last year. Betty was born on January 25, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Spring Valley, NY. She graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1939, at age 16. She was predeceased by her husband, James P. Malone, her parents, John Powers and Helen Weiman Powers, her sister Dorothy Powers Weidenman and her brother Jack Powers. She is survived by her family that she loved so much. Her children: James, of Chantilly VA, John (Peg) of Simpsonville SC, Mary Beth of New York, NY and Gerald (Maria) of Irvington, NY, along with her grandchildren: Lauren Malone Bolen (Tom), Erin Malone Montalbano (Michael) and Ryan Malone (Meghan); her great grandchildren: Will, Katie and Zack Bolen and many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to St John’s Riverside Hospital in her name. Mass of the Resurrection Saturday, Feb 29 at 10am Sacred Heart Church, 417 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry with Internment to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson. Visitation Friday, Feb 28 from 4-8pm Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home, 64 Ashford Ave, Dobbs Ferry.
