Mary A. Staples was born the youngest of seven children to the union of the late Jim and Mittie Lee Busbee Staples on September 26, 1934. At an early age, she confessed Christ and joined Springhill Baptist Church. She later moved her membership to Bethlehem United Methodist Church where she served as President of the United Methodist Women and Church Secretary. She remained a faithful servant until her death. Mary was a resident of Lineville most of her life. She attended and graduated from Clay County Training School. Mary united in the bonds of holy matrimony to Elijah Wood, Sr. and joined their two families. Mary and Elijah then made Anniston, Alabama their new home. Mary departed this earthly life on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at the Regional Medical Center, Anniston, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents; six siblings, Katie Jim Staples, Lurene Fairell, Annie Maude Oliver, Thomas Staples, Clinert Staples and George Staples. Those left to cherish and honor her memory are her husband, Elijah Wood, Sr., Anniston, AL; blended family of nine children, John Ivory (Sherry) Hearn, Atlanta, GA, Annettee (Arie) Maxwell, Dollie Dark, Dell Hearn, all of Lineville, AL, Nelson (Donna) Hearn, Charleston, SC, Kevin (Kathy) Wood, Birmingham, AL, Vivian (Ricky) Burney, Lineville, AL, Elijah (LaTangela) Wood, Jr., Anniston, AL, Cornelius (Felicia) Wood, Lineville, AL; sister-in-law, Florence “Dollie” Staples, Birmingham, AL; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life will be 1:00p.m. Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Lineville, Rev. Shirleen, Pastor and Eulogist. Interment will follow at Lineville Community Cemetery. Mrs. Wood will lie in repose one hour prior to the Celebratory Service. Public Viewing will be 12 Noon until 7:00p.m. Friday, December 13, 2019 at the St. Clair Chapel of Adams-Buggs Funeral Service.
