Marilyn Kendall Schroeder, 69, of Bloomington, IN passed away peacefully on December 16, 2019. Marilyn was born on September 16, 1950 (Mexican Independence Day) in Huntingburg, IN, to Clarence and Philomena (Schmidt) Kendall. Marilyn would recount many stories about her Kendall/Schmidt family, growing up with her brother Charles (Carolynn), and watching her father play guitar in the local band. Marilyn had a lifelong passion for academics. Upon graduation in 1968 (salutatorian) from Huntingburg High School, she moved to Bloomington and enrolled at Indiana University. While at IU during the Vietnam era, she made numerous lifelong friends, participated on the J Board, and served in various leadership positions for her dormitory, McNutt. Marilyn graduated in 1972 with a bachelor’s in mathematics education where she was one of few women that took the higher level mathematics courses. Throughout her life, she completed numerous certificate programs and ultimately completed her Master’s at Ball State University in 2005. Marilyn decided to pursue a career as a statistician supporting the US Military for over 35 years at both Ft. Knox and NSA CRANE. She worked for both NAPEC and DP with many amazing people that were lifelong friends. Marilyn would recount many different stories about how she completed training on how to operate tanks, performed war game simulations during the heart of the Cold War, and worked on many different databases that helped to increase the efficiency/effectiveness of services for our military. Marilyn was truly a pioneer being one of the few women that followed her career path in the 1970/80s. When Marilyn moved back to Bloomington in the late 1970s, she met the love of her life, Joseph W. Schroeder. Their first date was at the College Mall where they had dinner at MCL Cafeteria and saw the movie “The Jerk.” Their mutual love for academics drew them together and they were truly intellectual equals. They were married on July 26, 1980 and their son, Joseph H., was born on August 10, 1981. They were both loving parents that were devoted to instilling their passion for academics and ensuring that their son would not drown at summer camp. Marilyn has had a profound impact on many friends and family throughout her life. She was incredibly patient and had an open heart for everyone, no matter who they were or where they came from. Her diversity in knowledge and keen intellect made her a joy to talk with on any issue of the day. She was selfless and always put family and friends above herself. It is these attributes that we will all miss the most. Marilyn is survived by her son, Joseph H. Schroeder (Amanda), grandsons Maxwell and Benjamin Schroeder, brother Charles (Carolynn) Kendall, and many nieces and nephews: Missy Cox (Ryan and son Reid), Ryan and Colin Blocki, and the Schroeder’s; Kathleen, Kristen, Michael A., Nicholas and Michael D. Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband Joseph W., and parents, Clarence and Philomena Kendall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at St. Paul’s Catholic Center, 1413 E. 17th Street, Bloomington.
