Marian’s Obituary Marian Jean Bergeson McKelvy passed away on December 4, 2019 in Scarborough, Maine following a severe stroke. She lived a full life of 88 years. She was born on September 27th, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa to Andrew John Bergeson and Rose Caroline Scott Bergeson. Marian always valued education highly. She graduated from Marylhurst College in Oregon. Professionally, she taught high school English for many years in Oregon and also for the U.S. military in Germany. In that capacity, she met and married Michael Lewis McKelvy in Mannheim-Käfertal, Germany, where he was stationed as an infantry officer. Marian centered her life around God and family. Prior to meeting Michael, she explored her faith deeply at Madonna House, a Catholic community in Combermere, Ontario. Her spirituality guided her activities throughout life, whether teaching, volunteer work, or raising children. Marian made it a priority to support her children and grandchildren at their sporting events, graduations, art exhibits, and musical performances. She was committed to and active in the Church her entire life. Everything she did, even the little things, was done with great love. In private life, she enjoyed traveling, including recent cruises of the Norwegian coast and the Rhine. In 2017, she and Michael visited Bergen, Norway, her father’s birthplace, and last year she visited one of her grandchildren in Hawaii. Marian followed politics passionately, but respected and loved everyone no matter their viewpoint. Her grandchildren meant the world to her. A supportive friend, stalwart marriage partner, and wonderful parent, Marian will be deeply missed. There will be an empty Marian-shaped space in many lives. Marian is survived by husband Michael; sister Roseanne; children Mary, Nick, and John; grandchildren Rose, Ben, Isaac, David, Brendan, Lily, and Jia.
