John’s Obituary Beloved husband, father, brother and “Papou”, John Koinis, 91, of Novi, Michigan, passed away on December 24, 2019. Born April 8, 1928 in Toledo, Ohio, he was the fourth of six sons of the late Pauline and James Koinis. John and his beloved Alice enjoyed nearly 63 years of marriage before Alice passed away in 2016. John attended Toledo’s Scott High School and worked with his father and brothers on the family popcorn wagon, making and selling caramel corn and sugared peanuts. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and later obtained a Masters degree from the Chrysler Institute in Automotive Engineering. He enjoyed a 31 year career at Chrysler and an additional 10 years at General Dynamics in engineering and management positions. He met his wife Alice in Rockford, Illinois, when he was stationed there while serving in the United States Army. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Frank, Raymond, Christopher and Xenophon and his wife Alice. He is survived by his four sons, Peter (Constance) Koinis of Houston, TX, Steven (Reem) from Burlington, VT, Michael (Rena) from Bellaire, TX and Gregory from Milford, MI as well as nine grandchildren, Zeina Koinis, Katherine (Koinis) Monk, Christopher Koinis, Maria Eleni (Koinis) Soechting, Kara (Koinis) Bergerson, John Peter Koinis, Kevin Koinis, Jessica Koinis and Julia Koinis and one great grandchild, Andrew Bergerson. He is also survived by his brother William (Patricia) from Madison, GA, and sisters in law Nora Retsinas of Tuscon, AZ and Georgia Sakas of Dubuque, IA and many loving nieces and nephews. He was an extremely active member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Westland, MI, serving for many years on the Parish Council and a variety of other ministries, including starting the church’s “Feed the Needy” program which is now named after him. He loved playing golf and spending time with family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him. The Koinis family will receive family and friends on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 5:00 PM in the evening with the Trisagion Service at 6:30 PM. Additional visitation will be held on December 31, 2019 at 9:30 AM with the funeral service at 10:30 AM. Both services will be held at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox church at 36375 Joy Road, Westland, MI 48185. The Makaria luncheon will be held immediately after the funeral service for all guests at the Hellenic Cultural Center adjacent to the church. A private burial will be held after the luncheon at Franklin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations go to Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. Read More
