Obituary Gretchen Getty Hudson, 85, of Chicago, Illinois passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Wesley Place. Gretchen was born Gretchen Fay Getty on September 3, 1934 in Glen Falls, NY. She was the oldest daughter of the late George F. Getty and Marion K. Getty. She grew up in Bennington, VT and attended Wells College, graduating with a degree in biology. Gretchen retired from the Methodist Home (now Wesley Place) after working there for over 20 years. She had attended several Chicago churches through the years including Bethany United Methodist Church and Unity Chicago. Gretchen was survived by her four children from her marriage to Reverend John L. Hudson: Karen German (Douglas) of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Mary Gilbert (Alan) of Hillside, Illinois, Sarah O’Donnell (Timothy) of Barrington, Illinois and Mark Hudson (Russell Johnson) of Chicago, Illinois. Proud and loving Grandmother of ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Malinda Winans (Charles) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Gretchen had a very independent lifestyle that kept her constantly active with different groups of friends and her love for her family. She had a lifelong passion of the outdoors and gardening and always found a plot of land to grow flowers and vegetables – whether in the yard, on the porch steps or in community gardens. She enjoyed holidays and the simple beauty of the celebration; sometimes keeping the lights up year-round. Gretchen loved jigsaw puzzles; she would always have one in the works and many waiting to be tackled. Helping Grandma with puzzles was always a highlight to the grandchildren’s visits. The medical profession was an integral part of her DNA. Her love for the healthcare industry was apparent with a career in respiratory therapy. She was also an avid fan of medical TV shows, especially Marcus Welby MD. Despite her allergies, she loved every cat and dog that she came in contact with. Services will be privately held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to any of Chicago Methodist Senior Services or the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago.
