Elsie Anna Borchers died December 15, 2019 at the Avamere Assisted Living Center in Sherwood at the age of 100. Elsie was born on May third nineteen hundred nineteen to Bertha Emma Amanda and Claus Angelus Borchers on their farm of 60 acres where the Safeway store now stands. They had about 5 acres of onions – also hay, grain, fruit trees and berries. She had four brothers and three sisters; Herb, Len, Mildred, Ruth, Dick, Laurine, and Ray. She was the last remaining member of her generation. She attended the St. Paul Lutheran School and later attended Burroughs Business School in Portland, then worked for Sprouse Reitz Company for thirty-four years. Her job consisted of figuring inventories, invoices, leases and so forth for over 350 stores on the west coast and the mid-west. She spent a lot of time in hospitals with surgeries and so forth, but usually managed vacations each year. She enjoyed many trips to the Hawaiian Islands, Canada, the Rockies and other states. She eventually retired and moved to the Sherwood Park Apartments where she took care of her older sister, Mildred until she passed away in 1997. Elsie then moved to Avamere in January of 2000 even before they had the Grand Opening. Before working for Sprouse Reitz Company, she worked for the Portland Canning Company in Sherwood, picked berries, worked in the onions and worked for the Dundee Nut House to which she remarked, “Maybe that’s what’s the matter.” A friend of hers worked alongside Elsie where they sorted shelled walnuts there for a while. Elsie loved to paint and many of her paintings adorn walls of family and friends. Her life was filled with her family and the church which was a great comfort to her throughout her life. She is survived by her three nephews; Keith Minard, Joel Borchers, Jeff Borchers and her niece Julie Gholston. A viewing will be at Attrell’s in Sherwood from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, December 19. A funeral service will be on Friday, December 20 at 1:00 pm followed by graveyard services. A small reception will be held in the church basement right after graveside services.
