Elmer’s Obituary Elmer J. Kaul, 80, Bismarck, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2019 from lymphoma. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 30, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 106 Osage Ave, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. A prayer service will begin at 6:00 p.m. Elmer Jacob Kaul was born on May 22, 1939 in Ashley, ND to Jacob and Erna (Gohl) Kaul. He graduated from Leola High School in SD in 1957 and then graduated from Nothern State College. On June 4, 1961, he married Marcie Hoffman. They moved to Watertown, SD where he was a teacher for three years. He joined the National Guard, serving from 1963 to 1970. In 1964, they moved to Bismarck, ND and he worked for Woodmansee’s Office Supply. In 1966, he began working for the NDDOT as a realty officer and was proud of his 30 years of service, retiring in 1996. After retirement, he worked for Bismarck Honda as a courtesy driver for several years. Elmer will be remembered for his love of life and appreciation for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He and Marcie loved to travel and had been to all 50 states. He had a great love for music, both in listening and performing, playing in various bands from age 14 until recently. He was also a member of the barbershop chorus and the church choir. Most important to Elmer were his family and his faith. He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and his faith was the foundation of how he lived his life. He thoroughly enjoyed attending family events and especially looked forward to spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending his grandchildren’s activities. He had many additional interests including photography, gardening, reading, and collecting. Elmer will be remembered for his kind heart and willingness to help others. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his children, Jeff (Melissa Burghart) Kaul and Karmen Carlson; two grandchildren, Katelyn and Jack Carlson; brother, Herb Kaul; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Roehr and Dorothy Herman; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his wife, Marcie; parents; sister, Gertie Hoffman; and brother, Eugene.
