Charles’ Obituary Charles David Kepner, III, beloved husband of Janet Sumner (Grainger) Kepner for 62 years, died on December 22, 2019 in Mystic, CT. He was born October 9, 1934 in Stafford Springs, CT, son of Rev. Charles David Kepner, Jr. and Dorothy Warren Kepner. He graduated from Carlisle High School (PA) in 1952, Tufts University in 1956 and earned graduate degrees from Columbia University, Trinity College Hartford and the University of Hartford. He retired as a Commander USNR after serving three years on the USS Hazelwood and 18 years in the Naval Reserve. He lived in Simsbury and Avon, CT, for 40 years and taught mathematics at Avon High School for 36 years, serving as head of the department and retiring in 1996. He later lived in Groton, CT, and at StoneRidge Senior Living Community in Mystic. Always active in his community, he often volunteered and served throughout his life on local, state and national boards and committees. He was an avid sailor and member of Shennecossett Yacht Club in Groton since 1982. He was predeceased by his beloved daughters, Kristin Ann Kepner and Kimberly Jean (Kepner) McCahill, and granddaughter Rebecca Joy McCahill. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; son-in-law John McCahill (Julianne); two grandsons, Christopher McCahill (Chelsea) and Benjamin McCahill (Liz); sister Margery Kepner; two sisters-in-law, Judy Wuerdemann (Horace) and Georgia Estrella (Milton); and many loving nieces and nephews. A private family memorial will be held. There will be no calling hours.
