Carol’s Obituary Carol S. Hila passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH. A graduate of Saint Mary High School in Perth Amboy and Saint Francis College in Loretto, PA, she went on to teach for 25-plus years with the Woodbridge Township School District. After retiring, she became the president of the Woodbridge Chamber of Commerce. She held many memberships and honors: parishioner and Eucharistic minister of Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Avenel; Diocese of Metuchen Pastoral council; Catholic Daughters; patron of George Street Playhouse; American Cancer Society; Barron Arts Center Board; gala chair for Raritan Bay Medical Center Gala and Harbor Lights honoree; Grand Marshall Woodbridge Township Holiday Parade and Avenel Day parade; Colonia Country Club member for more than 50 years; Avenel Democratic Club; and Central Jersey Chapter of the American Red Cross. Carol loved tennis and attending the U.S. Open every year with friends, playing Mahjong at the pool with the “ladies,” and swapping stories with the girls in the knitting group. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Stella (Swierk) Safchinsky; brother, Jack; and beloved husband, John Hila. She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Tew, her husband, Jon and their children, Greta and Maci; son, John Hila, his wife, Kathleen and their children, Jeanine and Robert; sister-in-law, Barbara Safchinsky; niece, Jill Shifty and her husband, Don; nephew, Jack Safchinsky; great-nephew, Michael Chegus; and cousin, Billy Such, his wife, Terry and their children, Greg and Stephanie. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to Saint Andrew Catholic Church, 244 Avenel Street, Avenel, NJ 07001 in Carol’s memory would be greatly appreciated by her family. Read More
