Ruth H. Nessl, 101, of Sorento, IL, passed away at 1:20 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Cedarhurst of Greenville. Ruth was born July 12, 1917 in Reno, IL, the daughter of Bessie M. (Edwards) Bills. She was raised in Reno by her grandparents, Albert and Nancy Edwards. Ruth married Carl Smith in February of 1934, and he preceded her in death. She then married Harold Nessl in May of 1946, and he too preceded her in death. During World War II, Ruth worked for Small Arms in St. Louis, MO, while taking care of her mother, sister, grandparents, and raising her daughter. She then went on to work for Olin’s in East Alton, IL for 40 years, where she was known as “Ruthie the Riveter.” Ruth devoted her life to her family and faith. She was a member of the Reno Baptist Church for over 90 years, where she taught Sunday School and led various Bible studies. Ruth enjoyed quilting for her family, especially her grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Bessie “June” Bean; and son-in-law, Cliff Sidwell. Ruth is survived by her daughter, L. Nadine (Garold) Christian of Sorento, IL; grandchildren, Stephen (Linda) Sidwell of Alhambra, IL, Stacey (Pam) Sidwell of Sorento, IL, and Sharon (Eldon) Young of Sorento, IL; 5 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; niece, Sandra Jordan of Alton, IL; and nephews, Dennis Tosh of Worden, IL, and Jeff Bean of Savannah, GA. Visitation: The family will receive guests from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home, 201 S. Main St., Sorento, IL 62086. Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home in Sorento, with Rev. Frank Loskot, Jr. and Rev. Robert Carter officiating.
