Captain Raymond Augustus Reid, of Plymouth MA passed away peacefully at the young age of 84 on Thursday May 16th, 2019. He was raised in Hanson, MA by his father Alvin “Dampie” Reid and his mother Olive “Armah” (Brown) Reid with his late sister Jude Reid. He graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1954, where he also was an avid boxer and fencer. He served in the Army Reserves until he was honorably discharged in ‘57 while serving during the Korean War. He attended the University of Miami in Florida and then returned home to start in the family business of growing cranberries, real estate and selling insurance. He also was a call firefighter for the Hanson Fire Department, where he served under his father whom was the District Chief. This was also where he worked as Hanson’s first EMT in the department’s history. He was a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Wampatuck lodge in Hanson for over 50 years. He was a Shriner, member of the Aleppo Temple in Wilmington, he was a charter member of the Cedar Rod & Gun Club in Hanson, and a member of many different clubs and associations where he used his gift of gab to develop many new friendships and clients. In his thirties he moved his family to Maine to start the first KOA campground in Keiser Falls, where he was a registered Maine guide, licensed gun dealer along with working for IDS as a District Insurance Sales Manager. He enjoyed that time with family and friends to hunt, fish, snowmobile, and many other outdoor activities. He moved back to Massachusetts to start his own insurance agency in Plymouth, and assuming responsibility of the family cranberry bog. After retirement in the insurance business, he continued his entrepreneurship by running several small businesses including a Bed & Breakfast, charter fishing & the Lobster Lover’s Cruise on his yacht the Ray’s Lure. Capt. Ray was a US Coast Guard Captain and loved being on the ocean whether just taking in its beauty or fishing with family and friends. Along with his love for these activities he loved hosting the party and being the master chef. He never used a recipe but his creations and the amount of food he could serve an army. The house was always filled with family and friends whether holidays or family celebrations, no one left hungry and usually left with extra lobsters. He was the consummate world traveler that never missed an opportunity for a new adventure. Whether visiting his sons during their tour of duty in Europe or traveling to many parts of the US and visiting friends he met all over the world. His number one love was that of his large extended family that he embraced with unconditional love and admiration. He took pride in being a father and giving them the best that life could offer. He will be forever remembered and loved by the children he raised Heidi Reid, Robin Reid, Todd Reid, Raymond Reid II and wife Heather (Klock) Reid, Bobby Johnson, Debbie (Johnson) Wilson and husband Thomas, Lori (Coleman) Vandermolen and husband Peter, & Staci Glick. His love and legacy will live on through his grandchildren April, Jenny, Carrie, Adam, Kevin, Alex, Karen, Kelsea, and Jordan along with great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson. Viewing hours will be at Leighton McKinnon Funeral Home in Hanson on Wednesday May 22nd from 4 – 7pm, and there will be a graveside ceremony on Thursday May 23rd at Fern Hill Cemetery Hanson at 10am with a bereavement gathering after.
