Mrs. Phyllis P. Smith, 97 formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 5:25 a.m. Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Seminary Manor in Galesburg. She was born July 19, 1921 in Abingdon, the daughter of J. H. LaMerl and Genevieve (Henley) Kennedy. She married Jim Smith on June 7, 1941 in Palmyra, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August 28, 2003. They were married for almost 62 years. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Connie (and Raymond) Adolphson of Avon and their children, Patti (and Bob) Orwig and Jon (and Stephanie) Adolphson all of Avon; five great-grandchildren, Kristyn, Zachary and Jacob Orwig, Tori and Ryan Adolphson all of Avon; one half-sister, Joyce Jones of Bartonville; one niece, Shirley Shea of Columbus, Indiana; and one nephew, Eugene Kennedy of California. She is also survived by 15 step-grandchildren and their families. In addition to her husband and parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her brother, Frances Kennedy, two sisters, Nadine Eledge and Betty Sandidge Lewis, a great-grandson, Matthew Orwig, four stepsons, James Eugene Smith, Warren Smith, Robert Smith, Donald Smith, two step-grandsons, Gary Smith and Gregory Smith, and one nephew, James Eledge. Phyllis was about 4 years old when her mother died. During the summer of 1925, she went to visit her great-aunt, Lura Stuckey. That visit lasted until June 7, 1941 when she married her husband of almost 62 years. She graduated from Abingdon High School in 1939. During WW II, Phyllis worked for Gale Products in Galesburg continuing there for over 30 years, retiring in July of 1974. Phyllis was a member of the Abingdon First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Abingdon Half-Century Alumni Club. She enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing and traveling, especially to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. Per her wishes, cremation was accorded. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev, Jon Prain will officiate..
