John E. Smith, Jr., 76, of Opdyke, Illinois passed away at 5:40 P.M. May 3, 2019 at The Voyage Senior Living in Marion, Illinois. He was born February 13, 1943 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late John Smith, Sr. and Adaline (Koontz) Smith. He married Wanda Maxine Wilson in Mount Vernon, Illinois on July 22, 1961. They were blessed with 48 years of marriage until she preceded him in death on August 13, 2009. John is survived by his special friend, Gerri Boone of Mount Vernon, Illinois; two sons, Gregory Smith and wife, Nancy of Carbondale, Illinois and Douglas Smith of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Marla Brown of Carterville, Illinois; six grandchildren, Brittany Simpson and husband, Trenton, Lindsey Brown and fiancé, Clinton Pierson; Melissa Brown, Alaina Smith, Emily Smith, and Brian Clover; one great grandson, Gunnar Dale Simpson; one sister, Joyce Ann Hawkins; and several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and infant son, Marlin Kent Smith. John retired from the Jefferson County Comprehensive Services as the Maintenance Supervisor. He was a member of the Howard Community Chapel and the Old Timers Car Club. John Will be missed dearly by all who knew him. A Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home with Reverend Eric Ragan and Reverend Larry Rainwater officiating. Interment will follow at South Hickory Hill in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the St. Francis CARE Animal Shelter in Murphysboro, Illinois.
