Obituary Hazel R. Burkhead, 96, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away May 20, 2019. Hazel was born to the late Lewis C. Rice and Margaret Denney Rice in Columbus Ohio on March 2, 1923, one of seven siblings. Upon graduating high school, she took a position with the telephone company as a switchboard operator. Hazel was predeceased by her husband, James Warren Burkhead. Hazel is survived by two children, Rick Alan Burkhead and Karen Burkhead Price, two grandchildren, Kimberly Price Merkel, Brandon Scott Price, one great-grandchild, Ayden Slade Rose and several nieces and nephews. In 1988, Hazel relocated from Columbus, Ohio to Virginia Beach to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Hazel was active in her church and part of the United Methodist Church (UMC) Women’s Group, she loved crafts and participated in annual bazaars and shows through her local recreation centers and church, where she was also famous for her pecan tarts and creative crafts. She loved making new friends and playing games. Hazel was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who always put family foremost. In her final days she was surrounded by her loving family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 1 2019, at Salem United Methodist Church at 11 am.
