Harold Cohen August 31 1959 May 6 2019 (age 59)

Middleburgh – Harold Cohen, 59, of 195 Grove Street passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 6, 2019 at his ARC MIRA home. Harold was born on August 31, 1959 in Manhattan NY and was the son of the late David and Pearl (Schine) Cohen. He lived in Bayside, Queens with his parents and sisters Karin and Arleen. He was a delightful, mischievous and funny youngster who made friends with everyone he met. Harold became close with several neighbors while growing up who provided him with a number of special experiences, including flying in a private plane. Harold attended a special education program in public school in Queens through the age of 21 along with his longtime classmates. After graduating public school Harold worked in a sheltered workshop. He traveled there each day independently using public transportation. He also made friends with several police officers he met along the way to work. Harold continued to work at the sheltered workshop until he moved to Cobleskill, New York in 1998. He was welcomed as a resident with the Schoharie County ARC first living for a time in the Elm Street residence. He moved after a short time to the High Street residence where he lived for almost 20 years before moving the to Grove Street MIRA in Middleburgh in January, 2018. Harold worked as a sheltered employee for the Schoharie County ARC for several years before attending the Day Hab program. Harold loved numerous activities in his day program including working with the horses down the road. Harold made numerous friends with both consumers and staff in the residences he lived in and in the day programs he participated in. Harold really enjoyed good natured flirting with the women. He became close to many of the staff at ARC. They were an important part of his life. Harold had several hobbies including yarn work and drawing with his pens and papers. Harold collected pens, especially black one with particular points. He was fussy about his pens! Harold was a loyal and passionate fan of Star Trek as well as several television shows including My Favorite Martian, Dallas, Gilligan’s Island and I Dream of Jeannie. Harold could tell you the complete biographies of any and all the actors in these shows as well as story lines and dialog for any episode. Harold had a great sense of humor and would often make others as well as himself laugh. His timing was impeccable. Harold loved to dance and sing and sometimes listen to music. Most of all he loved his family and that love was returned to him. Harold loved going to his sister Arleen’s house for occasional weekends and eating the omelets his brother-in-law Steve made for him. Harold practically grew up knowing his sister Karin’s husband Larry – or “Warry” as he would say. Harold liked shopping with Karin who bought him yarn and pens. Harold was a foodie and loved shake and bake chicken, coca-cola and chocolate. Harold is survived by his two sisters, Karin (Larry) Fine of Greenfield Center, NY and Arleen (Stephen) Clark of Cooperstown, NY, one nephew, Benjamin Fine and one niece, Rebecca Fine. Harold will be terribly missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 from 4-6 PM at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY 12043.
