She was the daughter of the late Ollie Royster and Missie Jane Puryear Royster. She was a retired educator. She taught for over thirty-five years and in 1979 was selected as Granville County’s “Teacher of the Year.” She was a member of the North Carolina Retired Teacher’s Association, Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Hester-Crews Post #166, alumni associations of both North Carolina Central university and North Carolina A & T State University. and many other civic groups. She is survived by her husband, Augustus Washington; a daughter, Sheldonia Caprice Simmers of Oxford, and a son she reared, Melvin Oakley, also of Oxford. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 1 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church by Rev. Raymond Lassiter and Rev. Edward Davis. burial will be in Meadowview Memorial park. A viewing is scheduled for Friday, May 31 from 11:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. at Wright Funeral Home.
