Gary’s Obituary Purcell, Gary L. Midland, Michigan Passed away Saturday morning May 18, 2019 at his home in Midland after a lengthy illness at the age of 70 years. Gary was born January 5, 1949 in Midland, MI to the late William R. and Betty I. (Noyes) Purcell. Gary has resided in this area all of his life. Gary graduated from Midland High School in 1967. He enjoyed Karate and he trained in Tae Kwon Do and was an instructor for many years. Gary served in the U.S. Army for two years and was Vietnam War combat veteran. Gary served as a mentor for the Saginaw County Veterans Treatment Court, he was a counselor/leader of a PTSD group, was a volunteer fireman on the Midland Township Fire Department, was a deputy on the Midland County Sheriff Department Reserve. He was involved with the Red Cross, teaching CPR/First Aide and worked with the Hurricane/Tsunami relief efforts. He was a member of the D.A.V. in Midland and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 3651 in Midland. On December 18, 1968 Gary married Debbie L. Sargent, she survives him. A daughter; Tracy (Greg) Carr of Merrill, granddaughter; Chloe, his special buddy, his dog Gizmo, a sister; Eleanor Witkop of Midland, father and mother-in-law; Donald and Evelyn Sargent of Midland, sisters-in-law; Valery Sargent of Grand Rapids, Jean Wineman of Ann Arbor and many nieces and nephews also survive Gary. A sister; Susan Beebe and brothers-in-law; Terry Sargent and Norman Witkop have predeceased Gary. A memorial service will be held 12:00 Noon Sunday June 9, 2019 at the V.F.W. Post 3651 in Midland, MI. Per Gary’s wishes cremation has already taken place.
