He was on of nine children born to the late Julia Turner and Joseph Long, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. His life’s journey ended on Monday, May 13, 2019. Frank joined the United States Navy in 1954 and served his country, with distinction. His military career included a tour in Vietnam, during which he was awarded the Bronze Star. It was during his time as a Navy serviceman that Frank met the love of his life, Thelmond. Frank and Thelmond were married in 1957 and, together, raised their family of six children. On December 1, 1984, Frank retired from the United States Navy after thirty years of dedicated service to his country. Frank was known for his love of fishing and gardening; two hobbies he passed along to several of his children. Every year, his extended family looked forward to the squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes he grew in the summer and greens grown in the fall. Frank was preceded in death by his loving bride of fifty-nine years, Thelmond Neujean Long, several sisters and brothers. His love and memories will forever remain with his children, Arlene T. Long, Paula D. Williams, Franklin D.R. Long, Jr., Eric B. Long, Donald R. Long (Wanda), and Glenn F. Long (Carletta); eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. A funeral service, celebrating Frank’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 20, 2019, in St. John Baptist Church, Williamsburg, with the Rev. Walter Hudson officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Long may be viewed on Monday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the hour of his service.
