Doris was born in Norfolk County, (now Chesapeake) on August 24, 1927 to the late Walter Franklin & Annie O. Wilson Owens. She went to Waterford Elem. (now Edward Wilson School) and Carver HS. She married James Alexander Parson Oct. 23, 1943 and from this union; THEIR EIGHT CHILDREN James A (deceased), Henrietta, Brenda J(deceased), Nancy M Miller, Harry B(Deceased), Doris C. F(Deceased), Patricia A, Anthony E THEIR TWENTY TWO GRANDCHILDREN Sabrina, Roland, James, Tracy, Robert, Nanette, Christopher, Timothy, Herbert, Allen, Cheryl, Ron, Nicholas, Randy, Tonya, Jessica, Reginald, Antwan, Kizzy, Kenyatta, Ketra, Jessica THEIR SEVENTY- FOUR GREAT GRAND THEIR TWENTY – TWO GREAT-GREAT GRAND CHILDREN During Doris’s marriage she was a military wife, and temporary relocated to the northern Virginia area but other wised lived in the Norfolk, Chesapeake Communities. Not having a trade our Mother did domestic work and as soon as opportunity came she continue working and went to school for her Nurse’s Aide Certificate. During this period she learned all she could. This of course elevated her in knowledge and she continued to take every class offered for certification in more areas than needed. She began working as a Nurse’s Aide at Camden Nursing Facility then moving on to Portsmouth Medical Health Center as Nursing Aide Supervisor. Her reputation preceded her and she was offered a position at Portsmouth General Hospital. She exceeded job performance and began to be requested by both licensed nurses and doctors to assist them in rounds and follow thru with orders for patients. When job cuts were evident at the Hospital after 11 years of employment Nurse’s Aide jobs were phased out. Mother than secured a position again supervising and training others at Wilton’s Nursing Facility and retired at 69 years old. Did you know she was a Worthy Matron with the Eastern Star Scottish Rite for 9 years before salvation? She was a member of the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church? She later moved her membership to Cathedral of Faith Church of God in Christ where she accepted Jesus as her Savior with life changing results. In both churches she served as Nursing Unit Chair and at Cathedral of Faith, Mothers Board President. She was a founding member of Open Altar Worship Center, Virginia Beach, VA. Doris had been a missionary in many areas even before church or salvation. We can’t count the many people she has fed, clothe, fixed houses, gave monies for rent, lights, bus fare etc. Every had family Thanksgiving wondering if there would be enough food left after your Mom finish giving plates away? Well Grandkids you’ve been there and didn’t know it! Remember the African kid on the mantle? He was taken care of until his eighteenth birthday. Hey, those of you who helped with delivering or a demand for you monies feeding seniors sick or well who didn’t get meals on wheels on Saturdays. She took care of her parents and others, including Cousin Rosa for 30 years, and spoke out to family members who took advantage of them. She was the first African American none legal professional assigned Guardianship in the City of Chesapeake. Remember you dearest moments with her, a word, a hug, a phone call or a gift add it to these lines and her story goes on!! Leaving to cherish her memory, her Children, Henrietta Foreman, (Jasper), Richmond, VA, Nancy Miller, Chesapeake, VA, Patricia Parson, Colorado Springs CO, Anthony Parson, Newport News, VA, sister, Gladys Owens Ford, (Tony), Centerville, VA, Grand Children, Great Grandchildren, Great Great Grandchildren. Sister in Law, Nora Parson, VA, 2 Daughter in laws, Thelma Parson, Chesapeake, VA, Katie Parson, Texas, Son in Law, Jesse Flowers, Chesapeake, VA, nine nieces, nine nephews , Special Friends, Mothers Annie Razor and Bessie Tanner and too many cousins, friends, village children and grandchildren to name. A funeral service will be 11am Thursday May 23, 2019 at Cathedral of Faith COGIC; 2020 Portlock Rd; Chesapeake, VA 23324. Viewing will be 4-7pm Wednesday at Fitchett-Mann Funeral Services; 1146 Rodgers St; Chesapeake, Virginia 23324. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park.
