Bertha Helen LaMore, 93 of Columbus, NC passed away Sunday morning, May 12, 2019 at Smith Phayer Hospice House, Landrum, SC. Born in Bloomington, IL, she was the daughter of the late Abraham Lincoln Woosley and Hazel Baber Woosley and wife of forty years to the late Melrose Michael LaMore who passed away in 1986 in Manteno. Mrs. LaMore had moved to North Carolina in April this year to be with her son and daughter-in-law, coming from Lakeland, FL where she resided for the past 30 years. Helen had a 35-year career as a nurse and medical secretary for a family practice in Manteno. She assisted Dr. Raymond Malott in opening the original practice, and subsequently worked for Dr. Miguel Castro until her retirement. Mrs. LaMore was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was very active in the Manteno Women’s Club for many years. While living in Lakeland, she was active in a local church food bank, was well known for her sewing expertise and an avid quilter. Helen was a loving mother and always “the nurse”. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel LaMore and her long-time partner, Howard Buhl, also formerly from Manteno, who passed away in January of this year in Lakeland, FL Surviving is one son, Terry LaMore (Evangeline) of Tryon, NC. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Manteno. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Manteno, IL on Wednesday May 22, 2019 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
