Royer Bailey, Grove City formerly of Pittsburgh, passed peacefully on Thursday evening, Feb. 14, 2019 in Grove Manor. She was 94. Ruth was born in Grove City, PA on November 2, 1924, a tiny (5 lbs. 3 oz.) but welcome surprise after 3 sons, to Morris and Stella (Bingaman) Royer. A graduate of Grove City High School in 1942, she found a job quickly in the mail department at the Cooper Bessemer. A friend convinced her she could do better and helped her land a job at Grove City Bank, eventually moving up to PNC Bank in Pittsburgh, where she remained until her retirement in 1990. She met and later married Edwin Bailey on July 23, 1960. Ed worked as a photographer for U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh. While he dated Ruth, when he came to pick her up, when others might have brought her flowers, he brought black olives, a delicacy for Ruth. Ed was a fun loving jokester who brought the soft-spoken Ruth out of her shell and they worked well together; Ruth becoming the stabilizing force in their lives. She was welcomed in Ed’s family, loved and was loved by in-laws, nieces and nephews. They lived on Patricia Drive in Pittsburgh till Ed’s passing in December on 1996. Ruth moved back to Grove City a year later, buying and happily living in a manufactured home (never allowing it to be called a mobile home), cultivating friends, take bus trips and growing more and more flowers. Her health eventually drove her to give up her home and she moved into Grove Manor for the remaining 8 years of her life. Even there, by use of her wheeled walker, she visited, attended Sunday services, made more friends and could be seen at all hours happily buzzing the halls, mumbling under her breath if other residents didn’t get out of her way quick enough. She still went shopping, out to lunch or dinner occasionally and every Sunday morning, without fail, to Perkins for her Belgian Waffle, strawberries and whipped cream, lots and lots of whipped cream. She loved her many nieces and nephews, welcoming each with love. The nurses and staff at Grove Manor who gave her excellent care made her final years happy and comfortable. Ruth was a happy, loving woman who was a living embodiment of the religion she held so dear. She was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church. She will be missed by all who loved and cared for her. Survivors include, nieces and nephews of both the Bailey and Royer families. Her parents, husband and 3 brothers, Paul, Ralph and Warren Royer, preceded her in death.
