Sympathies message

  1. Am so sorry to hear about Larry Plummer’s death. As soldiers go, he was always one of my “favorites”. Seems as if I have known him forever, though I never saw him between 1965 in Gelnhausen and 2010 at Fort Knox. Then, at the Gettysburg reunion in 2016, we had dinner together. Nearly a fifty-year interval between conversations! I never met Mrs. Plummer who I understand died in 2015.

I was Larry’s company commander, Company B 1/33 Armor. One day, in early 1964, First Sergeant Church ran into my office, excited, and saying, “We have found an Armorer.” He had interviewed and selected Larry Plummer. In explanation, a good Armorer had to like (and know) weapons, have a penchant for following Army regulations, recognize the need for detail and supporting records, feel strongly about his work, and have the ability to focus and work alone, with little or no supervision. Larry was all that. From that day forward, we never had an Arms Room issue or problem. IG inspections were a breeze. He was magnificent at his work, a model at doing a tough, sometimes thankless, job.

In Gelnhausen, we had a mix of soldiers: Regular enlistees, usually the youngest. Draftees, usually the oldest. Volunteer draftees, all ages. Typically, they were all good soldiers, from different backgrounds and motivations, but bent on working hard, serving their country and themselves and returning home, better for the experience. I am not exactly sure which category identified Larry, but, I assure you he did his job well and provided great service to his country. I am not sure what he did later in life but I am sure he did it well, in the same deliberate detail, and continued his love for weapons and marksmanship. Like so many young men of that era, serving their country for a period of time was a very expected, standard practice, and very important to each of them. Larry did it well.

I went on to serve more than thirty years in the Army and still recall Gelnhausen, Germany, and some of the soldiers there, particularly Company B1/33, as very, very special. I will always remember Larry.

    My best to his family.
