Dorothy Eleanor Harris Raty, 89, our beloved mother, passed away on February 19, 2019. Services will be held on February 25, 2019, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 235 East Sego Lily Dr., Sandy, Utah. Family and friends may gather and greet each other at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Graveside services will be at Lindquist Memorial Washington Heights in Ogden. Eleanor was born on July 6, 1929, in Quincy (Sawdust), Florida to Beulah Mae Chester and Thomas Benjamin Harris and was the ninth of ten children. Her lifelong love of reading started in early childhood, and her teenage years were filled with family, school, work, and an influx of servicemen to the nearby military base. She enjoyed the weekly dances, and eventually married one of the servicemen, Leslie Shupe Raty, a Navy seaman she met at church. Eleanor and Leslie were married on December 1, 1950 in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple. Ten children were born into their family and she devoted the ensuing years to caring for her growing family, putting her southern hospitality, cooking, and organizational skills to good use. Eleanor and Leslie served a mission to the Frankfurt, Germany Mission from 1985 to 1987. After Leslie’s death, Eleanor loved to travel by train to visit and help family as needed. She was a life-long learner, mastering a variety of skills along the way such as gardening, crocheting, candy making, and quilting. Her life was filled with children, books, picnics, friends, church, temple service, and her pots and pans. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie S. Raty, daughter, Rebecca Huddleston and granddaughter, Elizabeth Peck. She is survived by her children and their spouses Robin and Craig Carroll, Pleasant Grove, Ut; JoEllen and George Chino, South Ogden, Ut; Charles Raty; Rachel and David Peck, Rexburg, Id; Emily and Craig Stewart, Walnut Creek, Ca; Peter Harris, Seminole, Fl; Mary Ballard, Tampa, Fl; Matthew and Lisa Raty, Sandy, Ut; Aaron and Andrea Raty, Farmington, Ut; Liz Call, and Bill Ballard. She is also survived by 37 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren and 2 great, great-grandchildren.
