Aline Jenkins Howard September 26 1921 January 31 2019

Aline’s Obituary The life journey of Aline Jenkins Howard, Ed.D has taken its final transition. On January 31, 2019 she joined her parents Samuel and Lydia Carstarphen Jenkins and her husband Frank Howard in their heavenly home. Aline was born and transitioned in her beloved Mobile, AL. For generations her family worshiped at the historic Stone Street Baptist, where she was a lifelong member. She combined her love of teaching and her Christian faith, teaching Sunday School at Stone Street Baptist church, believing fervently that every Christian life would be transformed through the study and practice of the tenants of the Ten Commandments. Early in life, Aline was encouraged by her mother and her grandmother Alice Carstarphen in her academic pursuits beginning in the Mobile Public County School System. She matriculated to Tuskegee University and graduated from Alabama State University. She received her master’s degree from Columbia University in New York. Continuing her educational pursuits in Mobile she obtained her Doctorate of Education from The University of South Alabama. Teaching in upstate New York and the rural counties in Alabama, upon returning to Mobile, she continued her career as a teacher and administrator at Cottage Hill Elementary School, Council Elementary School and Blount High School. She was a member of National Educational Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Psi Chapter. Aline’s life journey took a fascinating turn in 1940 when she was crowned the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association’s first queen and first African American monarch with King Elexis I, Alex Herman in Mobile. She was also the founding member of the Royal Family Feast, bringing the monarchs and members of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association courts together, who recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary. As an only child, she created circles of friends, some preceding her in death and some who will mourn and remember her until they meet her again. She is survived by two dedicated cousins, Patrick C. Packer of Birmingham, AL and Edward DeTiega of Mobile, AL and a host of other cousins from the Carstarphen and Jenkins linage; and beloved friends Betsy Richardson, Dorothy Chambers, Dorothy Grant, Ricky Moore and Georgiana Young.
