Minnie Shapiro March 11 1922 January 22 2019

Minnie’s Obituary Minnie Shapiro of Deerfield Beach,  FL , formerly of Schenectad y an d Galway, NY, passed away on January 22, 2019.  She was born  i n 1922 in Buchares t, Romania  to the late Clara Rothstein Horowitz and Jacob Horowitz.  She was predeceased by her husband, Edward P. Shapiro, D.M.D.,  on  November  7, 2018.    Minnie (aka Minna, Min) immigrated to Troy, NY in 1924, graduating from Troy High in 1940. She met Ed on a blind  date while he was a student at Union College.  They married in 1944 and had 74 wonderful years together.  Minnie worked as Ed’s dental office manager and dental assistant for many years.  She was an active “peacenik” and marched throughout her life for civil and women’s rights, as well as protesting against the war in Vietnam.  Minnie was a woman of high principles, was well read, and lived her life based on the Golden Rule, leaving this legacy to three generations.  While she traveled the world with Ed, some of her fondest memories were of their “camp” on Galway Lake, where she loved hosting family and friends. Growing up, her children spent summers there; each succeeding generation loved visiting them wherever they happened to be, and not just for her chicken soup and tuna fish salad! She enjoyed cultural events, especially going to SPAC for the ballet and orchestra, and passed this passion onto her children. She played bridge with Ed and friends both in Schenectady and Florida. She continued playing gin rummy, proudly winning time and time again, up until just a few weeks ago. Minnie is survived by her three children: Sandra (Steven) Handler of Galway, NY, Diane (Stephen) Harrison of Slingerlands, NY, and Richard (Karen) Shapiro of Colorado Springs, CO. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Laurence Anouna, Michelle Durkin, Lowell Harrison, Marisa Santos, Elena Shapiro, and Max Shapiro; five great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her brother, Irving.  Services were private.  The family would like to  acknowledge  the  wonderful care give to her by VITAS Hospice of Broward County, FL. For those wishing, the family requests donations be made to VITAS Hospice, 5420 NW 33rd Ave, Suite 100, Ft Lauderdale, FL 33309.  A memorial service for Min and Ed Shapiro is planned for the summer. Arrangements entrusted to Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care, University Drive Chapel. Read More
