Melvin Leroy Owen was born on December 8, 1945 to L.R. Owen and Ruth Owen in Tifton, GA. He passed away on January 27, 2019 after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his father, L.R. Owen. On September 26, 1964, Melvin married his love, Sandra. Even when his health began to decline, he spoke fondly of his Sandi and how important she was to him. Together they raised three boys, Jimmy, Marc and David. Over the years, they would welcome three special daughters‐in‐law and six grandchildren. The most important part of his life was serving his God, Jehovah. Melvin was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on November 16, 1957. It was his privilege to serve as an elder in the West Tifton congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He also enjoyed being involved in planning and coordinating assemblies and conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He spent many years, along with his family, working on Kingdom Hall building projects. Many of the Kingdom Halls in Georgia still use cabinetry that he built. Another highlight of Melvin’s life was driving a school bus for the Tift County School System. For 22 years, morning and afternoon, he interacted positively with the young people in his community as he transported them safely to and from school. Melvin is survived by: his wife, Sandra Owen of Tifton, GA; mother, Ruth Owen of Tifton, GA; sons, James (Melissa) Owen and Marcus (Diana) Owen of Tifton, GA, and David (Deirdra) Owen of Athens, GA; brother, Benny (Donna) Owen of Tifton, GA; six grandchildren, Lee Owen, Savannah Owen, Alex Owen of Tifton, GA, and Zack Owen, Alexis Owen and Harley Owen of Athens, GA; nieces, nephews, and a large spiritual family. The family would like to express their appreciation for those who helped them care for Melvin during his illness: Hospice of Tift Area, Palliative Care of Tift Regional, and Amedisys
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Melvin Leroy Owen December 8 1945 January 27 2019 (age 73).
