Mary Ousley 2019

Obituary of Mary Ousley Mary Ann Ousley was born August 12, 1924, in New York to Edward H. and Katherine White. Her parents both served in WWI—her father in the Balloon Corps, and her mother as a bacteriologist in a medical unit on the front in France. She was the second oldest of four children. Mary Ann showed a talent for art early and excelled in drawing, painting and sculpture. She was a cartoonist while at Smith College, where she earned a degree in Art. She was a model, even published in Mademoiselle Magazine. After college, she worked as a social worker at a settlement house on the Philadelphia waterfront before marrying Paul Ousley. The Ousleys lived in New York City before moving to Portland, Oregon, where Mary Ann gave birth to four children: Cindy, Louise, Diana and Edward [Ned]. Paul was instrumental in bringing a group of Hungarian refugees to Portland after the revolution in 1954, and the Ousleys started the Budapest Restaurant to give jobs to several of the refugees. Mary Ann ran the restaurant, even through several of her pregnancies. She later worked as a Social Worker for the American Red Cross, aiding families of Vietnam vets. Mary Ann and her children moved to Palm Beach County, Florida, in 1969, to be near her family. They lived there several years before moving to DeLand where she lived ever since. Mary Ann received a M.A. in Education at Stetson and taught Exceptional Student Education at Deland High School for about 10 years. She continued to volunteer for VCS for years after retirement. Mary Ann loved sports, especially baseball, basketball, tennis and football. She was a longtime Cubbies fan, and was such a fan of the Miami Dolphins in the ‘70’s that she named her 4 cats after favorite players. She loved having visitors, especially her family. She will be missed, particularly her humor, affection, and ability to find beauty in everything around her. Mary Ann was predeceased by her siblings Katherine McLennan, Edward H. White III and Joan Minear and her son, Ned. She is survived by her daughters Cindy Snyder (Lynn; Edgewater, FL.), Louise (Gary Montalbo, Goleta, CA.), and Diana Dean (Jack; Lake Helen, FL.), plus 9 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Alliance Health Center (second floor). In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Alliance Health Center or the charity of your choice.
