A man who was caring, gentle, loving and full of life, one who brought joy to our family, Gilbert Lavon Brooks III (68), departed this life on Sunday, January 13, 2019. He was greeted in heaven by his parents. Gilbert was born on August 10, 1950 in South Bend, IN to Gilbert L. Sr. and Clara (Coley) Brooks. After graduating from high school, Gilbert continued his education in New York. Returning to South Bend in 1995, he sought employment as a welder at the Riblets Corporation, retiring after many years of service. Gilbert proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserve. Gilbert united with the Miami Village Church, where he became their drummer and attended service faithfully. Gilbert is survived by his loving daughter, Yolanda Brooks; three grandchildren: Anthony Adams, Jasmine Morgan and Tyron Ingrim; four great-grandchildren; sister Willa Bonita Belanger of Stone Mountain, GA; aunt Esther Wade of Culver, IN; brothers Leonard F. (Erma) Brooks of Memphis, TN and George D. Brooks of South Bend. His extended family, nieces, nephews and friends – we, the family and friends—will say now “REST, REST”. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elizabeth Loretta Jennings.
