Dr Thomas A Campbell 2019

Thomas Allen Campbell, M.D. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family onJanuary 25, 2019 the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. He was born September 16, 1922 in Canton, Illinois to William and Caroline Bridget (O’Neill). Survived by Mary (daughter), Raymond (son-in-law), Mary Regina (granddaughter), brother George (Casey), sister Sr. Betty (William Mary) RSM, brother-in-law Joseph (Dorothy), nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Jeanne (Viola), brothers Bill (Carol), Francis Leroy (Gaetana), Dr. James Bernard (Chris), John (Lorraine), Dr. Patrick (Shirley), Neil, Robert and sisters Mary Ellen (Edward), Inez (Eugene), brothers-in-law Sam (Agnes) and Tony (Peggy) Viola. He attended elementary and high school in Sheboygan, WI. He graduated from Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University, Chicago in 1951. He practiced his Residency at Bay Pines V.A. Hospital. He was Chief of Staff at St. Anthony’s Hospital and also worked at multiple hospitals including Palms of Pasadena, St. Petersburg General, Edward White and Bayfront Medical Center. He was a devout Catholic and daily communicant. He traveled with his wife 17 times to Rome, Italy! He particularly admired the Painting of The Conversion of St. Paul by Caravaggio in the Church of Santa Maria del Populo, as well as many other masterpieces in the Churches of Rome. He also had lunch in the Papal Apts. with His Eminence Cardinal Luigi Ciappi O.P. and Fra Mario O.P. many years ago! He met and talked alone with Archbishop St. Oscar Romero for 4 hours during a visit to Sr. Betty in Washington DC in the 1970’s. He did missionary work in a hospital with his wife in Peru in the 1960’s to help Sr. Betty. He attended yearly Men’s Retreats with Ven. Fr. John Hardon S.J. in the 1990’s. He was an astronomer and photographed Halley’s Comet in 1986 and Comet Kohutek in 1974 published in the St. Petersburg Times. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing. He tagged 999 barracuda for the American Littorial Society. He enjoyed playing the piano, birdwatching, shell and stamp collecting. He will be missed by family and friends. Friends will be received at The Brett Funeral Home, 4810 Central Ave., Wednesday Jan. 30, 2019 from 2-4PM. Viewing will also take place on Thursday, Jan. 31 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church from 10 a.m. , one hour prior to the Funeral Mass which follows at 11:00 am Entombment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
