Obituary for Dr. James Cornett, DDS Dr. James L. Cornett, age 73, of Columbus, Ohio passed away at his home Tuesday, January 8, 2019 holding hands with his wife and daughter, the way he wanted it. He was born March 3, 1945 at Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio to the late Dallas Cornett and Mary Elsom Cornett. He is survived by his wife Sandra Cornett (Fisher), daughter Erin Cornett Griffing (Bryce) of Clintonville, OH and granddaughters, Willa Joy and Tessa Hope Griffing; brothers Rick Cornett (Barbara) of Powell, OH and Jeffery Cornett of Jacksonville, Fl; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. He graduated from Elgin High School in Marion County in 1963, where he was All State in Basketball and Marion County Teenager of the Year. He attended The Ohio State University for undergraduate education and was admitted to the OSU College of Dentistry after 3 years, where he graduated in 1970. During that time he was a member of the academic dental fraternity, Xi PSI PHI. In 1970 he hung out his shingle as the “new dentist” in Marysville, OH, where he practiced for 45 years until 2015. Jim was a committed and compassionate dental professional to his patients and they were an essential part for the purpose of his life. Also, special in his life and dental practice were the staff members who were like family to him. From 1973 until his retirement he taught dental students in the emergency clinic and in the Department of Endodontics at the OSU College of Dentistry. He loved imparting “pearls of wisdom” to the students on what private practice was all about. Jim was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed motorcycling on his “hog” and with Sandy on their Gold Wing; RV camping with the church group; boating, water & snow skiing; tailgating and OSU football games. Jim was a member of Linworth United Methodist Church, where he participated in many leadership positions in the past. He was a member of the American Dental Association and the Ohio Dental Association. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Family will receive friends at 2:30 PM on Saturday, January 12 at Linworth United Methodist Church, 7070 Bent Tree Blvd, Columbus, OH. Funeral services will follow at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the OSU Foundation (fund # 602624) for scholarships and support of research for residents in the College of Dentistry, Department of Endodontics.
