OBITUARY Betty Lee Badolato June 4, 1925 – January 28, 2019 Obituary for Betty L. Badolato On January 28, 2019, Betty Lee Badolato, (nee Anderson), age 93, passed peacefully to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, Michael, with her family at her side. Betty was born and raised on Appleton Street in West Baltimore, Maryland and was the daughter of the late Beda E. Smith and step-daughter of the late John J. Smith, one of four children. While in west Baltimore Betty attended Western High School, studying courses in clerical and business skills that led to her eventual lifelong career as a secretary and office manager. While at Western High School she was recognized for her exemplary skills at shorthand and conducted a demonstration in shorthand. While still in West Baltimore, she knew Michael Badolato, who was a close friend of her twin brother Jack, in 1946 she first had an unexpected date with Michael, who was just home from his World War II service in the Army Air Force. Michael was in uniform, had stopped by her home to ask if her brother Jack could go out. Since Jack was not home, he then asked Betty to go to the movies. That led to their inseparable life together and a cherished marriage of almost 69 years. They were married at St. Anthony of Padua Parish on Frankford Avenue, Baltimore, MD on June 12, 1949. Betty had been working for a bank in Baltimore, Maryland on Redwood Street. When they first married they lived in an apartment on Pelham Avenue, but in1954, they moved to Towson, Maryland (Loch Raven Village) and started a family. Betty became a homemaker, and together they raised two boys, Michael Edward Badolato, Jr. and Daniel Lee Badolato. A son, David Louis Badolato, who was the twin of Daniel, (passed away in infancy). Betty continued as a loving, devoted and full-time mom and homemaker until 1964, when she resumed a career as a secretary/office manager with Towson Unitarian Universalist Church where she remained employed until her retirement 38 years later. In 1959, Betty and Michael again moved to a larger home in Lutherville, Maryland where they continued raising their sons and actively became involved in their Boy Scouts and Explorer activities from 1967 until 1976. They were members of Church of the Nativity where Betty was a member of the church choir. Betty was also a very talented and avid bowler, winning various awards for her talent in duckpin and tenpin bowling. She also became an avid golfer when her husband Michael introduced her to the game – a game they both loved and would continue to play almost their entire lives, playing lots of golf, enjoying many golf courses in their travels. They also were longstanding and active members in the Kiwanis Club of Towson-Timonium from 1969 until well into their retirement and move to Conway, SC in 2013. Throughout their retirement in Maryland, Betty enjoyed travel throughout the United States and Europe with her husband, along with vacation trips with their son Dan, daughter-in-law Diane and their grandchildren. They particularly enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren David and Chris, and playing late night “pinochle” and “500” card games with Daniel and Diane well into the early morning hours many times. Betty enjoyed crocheting and plastic canvas crafts, and was wellknown for the hundreds of plastic canvas Christmas ornaments she made each year for family and friends. Betty and Michael were also quite fond of their daughter-in-law Diane’s family and enjoyed their family gatherings. Betty and Michael enjoyed dining out frequently. In 2013, Betty and Michael relocated to Conway, SC to reside near their son Dan and his wife Diane, whom they remained very close. Eventually they moved to the Palmettos of Garden City, where the residents and staff grew quite fond of them. Michael and Betty were inseparable their entire lives until Mike passed away in April 2018. Betty remained there, and with her upbeat and outgoing personality, Betty could “light up a room”, and she was deeply loved by many of the residents and the staff that cared for her there until her passing. Betty is survived by two sons, Michael Jr. of Montana and Utah, Daniel and his wife Diane of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, David Louis Badolato and wife Meghan, and Christopher Daniel Badolato, and two little great granddaughters, Grace Anne “Gracie” and Frances Mae “Frankie”. She is also survived by her twin brother, Jack and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son David Louis in infancy, by a sister, Evelyn Milburn, and a brother, James A. Briggle.
