Albert “AJ” Petras July 19, 1956 – January 01, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card A J Petras, better known as Al, died suddenly of a heart attack on January 1, 2019, at age 62 . The son of the late John and Mary Petras, he leaves behind many friends and family in New Jersey, Portugal, Boston, and Provincetown. Born in Rahway City, New Jersey, Al moved to Massachusetts to attend Boston University. Extremely proud of his alma mater, he was a booster of Terrier athletics, especially men’s hockey and basketball teams. He assisted with BU academic programs including the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship, the Center for the Study of Asia, and the Center for Emerging Social Media. Al was a longtime employee of Boston Edison and Bank of America, Senior Vice President, where he managed a partnership with China Construction Bank. His volunteer and charitable activities included serving as a docent at the Quincy Homestead, co-chair of the New England Committee of the Human Rights Campaign, founder and principal organizer of Pride in Scholarship, Co-Chair of Gay Games VII Chicago, and was the first openly gay Big Brother in MA. An avid traveler, Al took great delight in visiting his relatives in Portugal. He was a loving master to his two dogs, Petey and Otto. He was a generous soul, quietly helping those in need, and publicly championing civil rights for all. A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home, 275 West Milton Avenue, Rahway, NJ 07065. Interment St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, Colonia. Family will greet guest on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 10-11 am at the Funeral Home. Print Obituary
