Mildred Louise Cook McVicker died December 14, 2018, at Homewood of Plum Creek, Retirement Center, in Hanover, Pennsylvania. She was 92 years old. Mrs. McVicker was born in N.W. Washington, D.C., in 1926, to Francis Wilson and Margaret Virginia Grimes Cook, who both worked for the U.S. Federal Government. Mildred graduated from May P. C., with the U.S. Navy. In 1945, Mildred was chosen by the State Department to attend the first United Nations Conference in San Francisco, as special secretary to two delegates. Upon her return, she attended Wilson Teacher’s College and George Washington University. She married Eugene McVicker, in May 1948, and moved to Gettysburg where she worked for the National Park Service. As a minister’s wife, she worked behind the scenes in many capacities: teaching classes, playing the piano and organ for church and Sunday school, visiting shut-ins, singing in the choir, and hosting events. She raised three children, volunteered for Girl Scouts, and many neighborhood and community organizations. In 1965, she returned to finish her college education, and graduated from University of Maryland in 1970, with a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught Kindergarten at Highland View Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland, until her retirement in 1987. Mildred enjoyed sewing, crewel embroidery, and gardening. She was an avid bird-watcher and nature enthusiast. She played the piano for relaxation and enjoyment. She loved holding parties and events, and singing in the church choir. She traveled extensively and participated in Elderhostel and other continuing education activities. She was active in the American Association of University Women, local book clubs and civic organizations, and served as the Registrar for the Women’s General League of Gettysburg College. She is survived by a sister, Margaret Cook Sayers, of Niskayuna, New York; son, David Eugene McVicker and his wife, Rhona Knoblock McVicker, of Mt. Airy, Maryland; daughter, Marcia McVicker Stubbs and her husband, Edward Francis Stubbs, of New Orleans, Louisiana; daughter, Marilyn Louise Grimes McVicker and her wife, Ellen Elizabeth Kinnear, of Bakersville, North Carolina; ten grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Dr. Eugene R. McVicker in 2008. Visitation will be held at St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York Street, Gettysburg, at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 21, 2018. Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am.
