Mr. Joseph “Bernie” Schmitt, age 83 of Cedar Creek Twp, Michigan passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, December 27, 2018 at his home. He was born on January 11, 1935 in Cedar Creek Twp, Michigan to Joseph Henry & Mary Ann (Thomas) Schmitt. Bernie had been employed as a welder for CWC Textron in Muskegon for 30 years until his retirement in 1992, when he then spent the next 25 summers with his wife on Drummond Island. Bernie was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Brunswick. On October 13, 1956 he married Irene R. Rynberg and she survives him along with 5 children: Carla (Dan) Campbell, Cindy (Tom) Buckner, Joe (Dee) Schmitt, Jeff (Lori) Schmitt, Carol (Dan) Wheeler; 13 grandchildren & 21 great grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 4, 2019 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Brunswick, where Bernie was a lifetime member, with Fr. Pete Schafer as Celebrant. Visitation will also be at the church from 10-11 AM on Friday. Interment will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Church Cemetery in the Spring.
