Obituary for Mr. Jose “Joe” Collazo Jose’ “Joe” Collazo was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Ybor City. He attended the old Jefferson High School and joined the Merchant Marines when he was only 16 years old. In 1961, when he was 18, he volunteered to join the United States Army where he became a Sergeant until receiving an honorable discharge in 1967. In 1965 he married the love of his life, Marion Rubio, to whom he would be married to for 53+ years. During their marriage they adopted a little girl named Karen who he recently referred to as “The best thing that ever happened to me”. He is best known around the Tampa Bay area as being one of the best auto painters and poker players around. He loved animals (especially his little Lucy), cars, auto racing, sports and playing poker with his friends and was always ready to make everyone around him laugh. He was truly a character. In 2007, he became a very proud grandfather to twin boys, who were the light of his life. He was loved by everyone who knew him and will continue to be remembered fondly for being a ray of light in this world. A true man who always put his family first and was always willing to help his friends. He will be greatly missed and forever loved and remembered. He is survived by his loving wife, Marion, his daughter, Karen, his grandsons, Christian and Grayson, his sister in law who was more like another daughter, Marilyn Savoie and her husband John; as well as his two sisters, Lydia Pernas and Norma Matassini, his brother in law, Nick Matassini as well as many nieces and nephews. There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, December 30th from 3-5 p.m. at Tampa Baptist Manor, 215 W. Grand Central Ave. Tampa, Florida 33606. He will be receiving Military Honors at the Celebration. Please feel free to join us in celebrating a life well lived.
