Obituary for John Paul Smeriglio, Sr. John Paul Smeriglio, Sr., age 97 of Long Branch, died peacefully on Monday, December 17, 2018 at home. Born in Niece, France, he was a life resident of Long Branch. John was the manager and supervisor of Central Pastry Bakery Department at Fort Monmouth for 30 years before retiring in 1980. He was a WWII 1st Class Navy Officer serving on the USS Mount Vernon and USS Freestone APA 167 and was a true NY Yankee fan. He was predeceased by his parents Mariano and Theresa Smeriglio and 3 brothers, Pasquale Smeriglio, Victor Smeriglio and Mario Smeriglio, Jr. Surviving are his wife Vincenza DeVivo Smeriglio; his children and their spouses, Theresa and Frank Scallo of Pt. Pleasant, John Paul Smeriglio Jr. of West Long Branch, Josephine and Frank Basil of Las Vegas, NV, Nancy and Randy Yelton of West Long Branch and Mario and Merrydth Smeriglio of Ocean; two brothers and a sister in law, Frank Smeriglio, Willie Smeriglio and Mariann; his sister, Nancy Smeriglio Izzo of Ashtabula, OH; his grandchildren, Frank and Alina Scallo of Ocean, Michael Scallo of Pt. Pleasant, Vincent and Tara Basil of Las Vegas, NV, Samantha Jo and Richard Rios of San Diego, CA; Michael Basil of Las Vegas, NV, Ryan and Nikki Yelton of Red Bank, Richard Yelton of West Long Branch, Nichole and Curtis Snyder of Haverford, PA, Shana Smeriglio of Cherry Hill, Mario Jr., and Ariana Smeriglio of Montclair; and his great grandchildren, Rachel and Joshua Scallo; Winston, Olivia, Axel and Robin Snyder; Vincent, Luke and Charlotte Basil; Ella Jo and Ian Rios and Penelope Basil. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 20 from 5 – 8 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Avenue in Long Branch. Funeral, Friday; 9:30 am at the funeral home with a service to begin at 10:00 am. Entombment will follow at Woodbine Mausoleum in Oceanport.
