Obituary for Charles Lamar Phillips It is with great sadness that the family of Charles L. Phillips, known to family, friends and colleagues as Sam, announces his passing on December 23, 2018 at the age of 86. He was Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at Auburn University and was named Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecturer in 1984. He worked for NASA on development of the Saturn V booster control system, and with U.S. Navy in automatic landings in aircraft control and with U.S. Army in simulation of missiles. He taught at Georgia Tech and taught short courses for George Washington University in the United States, Germany, and England. He co-authored three textbooks on digital control systems. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Laverne Phillips, daughters Susie (John) Fendley, Carole (Charles) Pendergraft; grandchildren, Taylor Fendley, Justin Fendley, Jackson Fendley, Rebecca Walters, Alex Walters, and sister-in-law Joyce Phillips. He was preceded in death by parents Joe and Gertrude Phillips, brother Bobby Phillips, sisters Ellen Byrd and Pat Cook, and son Chuck Phillips. A private celebration of his life is planned.
